A History of the Cimarron Baptist Church
by Chuck Terpening, former pastor, June 28, 1986
The First Baptist Church of Cimarron was constituted on January 15, 1946, with twenty charter members. Reverend Paul Jolly was the first pastor. The congregation met in the City Hall of Cimarron until the dedication of its first building on June 20, 1948. During the ministry of Reverent Burt Lloyd, the church added a new worship center to the present building which was dedicated on November 22, 1970. The worship center was built with volunteer labor and served the church well until March 30, 1985, when both structures were destroyed by fire. Prompted by the Lord, the church took the opportunity to re-locate. It purchased an acre of land at the corner of Highway 64 and Lambert Hills Blvd. Because of the triangular shape of the lot, an anonymous donor donated the additional land so that the church building could parallel the highway. Our new building was erected with mostly volunteer labor. Two Baptist mission groups, six families, church members and friends contributed to the work. Baptists from five states helped to build the present structure. The states represented were: Arizona, Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Construction began in August of 1985 and the building was dedicated on June 28, 1986. Monies from our insurance policy completely funded the relocation and construction of our building. The total expenditure was over $175,000. The church moved into our new building, debt free. To God be the glory, great things He has done! |
